Le lieu

The Everest Base Camp Trek is the world's most iconic high-altitude hiking journey, reaching 5 364 m at Everest Base Camp in the Khumbu valley of Nepal. Over 12–16 days from Lukla (2 860 m), the trail passes through the heart of Sherpa country, ascending through rhododendron forests, yak pastures and glacial moraines to the foot of the world's highest mountain (8 849 m). The route combines stunning scenery — Ama Dablam (6 812 m), Pumori (7 165 m), the Khumbu Glacier — with a deep immersion in Sherpa Buddhist culture. Altitude acclimatisation is critical; Namche Bazaar (3 440 m) and Dingboche (4 410 m) are key rest stops.

L’intérêt

Namche Bazaar — the 'Sherpa capital' with Saturday market, bakeries and views of Everest. Tengboche Monastery (3 867 m) — a spiritual highlight set against towering peaks. Kala Patthar (5 545 m) — the best viewpoint of Everest's summit above Base Camp. Everest Base Camp during climbing season (April–May): see Everest expedition camps.

Un peu d'histoire

The route follows the path used by the early Everest expeditions of the 1920s and 1950s, popularised by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's first ascent on 29 May 1953. Sagarmatha National Park (UNESCO, 1979) was established around the route. Commercial trekking began in the 1960s and the EBC trek is now one of Nepal's most important tourism products, contributing significantly to the Khumbu region's economy.
