The Three Passes Trek is the most demanding standard trekking circuit in Nepal's Khumbu region, looping through Sagarmatha National Park at altitudes ranging from about 2,800m at Lukla to over 5,550m at Kala Patthar and the Kongma La pass. Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp trek, it links the base camp detour with the Gokyo Lakes valley and the Chhukung side valley by crossing three glaciated high passes, Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La, each requiring a pre-dawn start and rocky or icy scrambling. The terrain alternates between forested river valleys near Lukla and Namche Bazaar and barren, high-altitude moraine above 4,800m, and the itinerary is built around multiple acclimatization days given the sustained high-altitude exposure.
