Salkantay Trek

The Salkantay Trek is a multi-day mountain crossing in the Cusco region of Peru, a quieter, less-regulated alternative to the classic Inca Trail for reaching Machu Picchu. It climbs from farmland around Mollepata up through high alpine terrain to the Salkantay Pass at roughly 4,600m, in the shadow of the glaciated Salkantay peak, before dropping steeply into subtropical cloud forest and the Urubamba river valley. Elevations along the route span an unusually wide range, from below 2,000m in the jungle sections to nearly 4,700m at the pass, exposing trekkers to several distinct ecosystems in a single trip, and it typically finishes by joining the corridor through Hidroeléctrica into Aguas Calientes, the gateway town for Machu Picchu.
