Madeira Crossing – MIUT 115

El lugar

This coast-to-coast crossing follows the Vereda Real (King's Trail) and the PR1 trail network across Madeira's serrated volcanic spine, climbing to Pico Ruivo (1862m), the island's highest point, along narrow ridgelines with sheer drops on both sides. The route passes through UNESCO-listed Laurisilva laurel forest and hand-cut 19th-century mountain tunnels built for the levada irrigation system. Weather changes rapidly at altitude, with cloud inversions common above 1400m, and the terrain is consistently steep given Madeira's origin as a single volcanic massif rising directly from the Atlantic seabed.
