The Annapurna Circuit winds through the Annapurna, Manang, and Mustang regions of central Nepal, looping around the Annapurna massif in a traditionally anti-clockwise direction chosen to ease altitude adaptation. Trekkers pass through a wide range of terrain and climate zones, from subtropical river valleys and terraced farmland in the lowlands, through pine and rhododendron forest, into the arid, high-desert Tibetan-influenced landscape of the upper Manang and Mustang valleys. The route's defining challenge is the Thorong La Pass at 5,416m, crossed after a multi-day acclimatization buildup through Manang, Yak Kharka, and Thorong Phedi, with well over 10,000m of cumulative ascent and descent across the full circuit.
