The place
Unstaffed cabin set at 670 m in the Black Forest (Schwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, coordinates 48.79 N, 8.48 E — northern section of the range towards Pforzheim and Bad Wildbad). The place-name "Ziegelhütte" ("tile-maker's hut") recalls the old tile-making workshops characteristic of German forests — clay and wood were both abundantly available there. Notable location in the northern Black Forest, on the Mittelweg (one of the range's three great historic long-distance trails, linking Pforzheim to Waldshut over 233 km). Basic, freely accessible building, a rustic stop for hikers doing loops in the Nordschwarzwald (northern Black Forest). Exceptional Schwarzwald forest setting: fir and spruce stands that gave the "Black Forest" its name, old beech woods, hedgerow meadows, cultural landscapes emblematic of the region's historic industrial heritage (glassmaking, Black Forest clockmaking). Wildlife: roe deer, red deer, wild boar, red squirrel, black woodpecker, capercaillie (the last German population). A stop on the Mittelweg and the Schwarzwaldverein network.
