The place

Zapporthütte SAC at 2276 m, a traditional hut near the Zapport and Paradies glaciers, at the source of the Hinterrhein (canton of Graubünden, Switzerland — not Mesolcina, this side is Romansh-speaking). Built in 1872 on the edge of the glacier. An idyllic setting in the upper Zapport valley, in the heart of the Adula massif. Access from the village of Hinterrhein in about 3h30-4h along a very demanding alpine trail — the first section crosses the Swiss Army's tank firing range: it is essential to check the military firing schedule (tel. +41 58 482 11 11). Staffed from late February to mid-May and from late June to mid-October; open the rest of the year with cooking facilities. Splendid panorama over 11 peaks above 3000 m, including the Rheinwaldhorn / Adula (3402 m), the highest point of the Hinterrhein valley.
