The place

Hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Mount Somers area of Hakatere Conservation Park, Canterbury (South Island, New Zealand), at 710 metres elevation. Sleeping on platforms with mattresses plus bivouac space. Facilities: wood stove, rainwater tank, dry toilets. A volunteer warden is present from October to April. Access via Jig Road in 2-3 hours or from Pinnacles Hut in 3 hours. Rates until 30 June 2026: hut night 25 NZD/adult Sunday to Friday, 35 NZD Saturday; campsite 12.50 NZD adult Sun-Fri, 15 NZD Saturday; children 5-17 years -50%, under 5 free. Online booking possible until 8 pm on the day. Backcountry Hut Pass accepted. Ideal outing for families or beginner hikers, with nearby attractions (water caves, Emerald Pool).
