Winklerner Hütte: A Rustic Mountain Refuge in Austria The Winklerner Hütte is a mountain refuge belonging to the Winklern section of the Austrian Alpenverein. Located at 1906 metres altitude on the Winklerner Alm, on the eastern slope of the Schober group near Winklern in the Möll valley, on the border between Carinthia and Tyrol, this refuge is very popular with hikers. It can accommodate around 30 people in a dormitory equipped with mattresses. Open since 31 August 1969 as a youth hostel of the Alpenverein, the Winklerner Hütte is an ideal starting point for excursions into the Schober group. Access From Iselsberg to the Gasthof Schöne Aussicht, then along a service track directly to the refuge, walking time about 2 hours. From the hamlet of Penzelberg in Winklern (national park car park, walking time about 15 minutes). Hiking Routes Strasskopf, 2401 m, walking time: 1½ hours. Großhorn, 2691 m, walking time: 3½ hours.
