The place

Standard-category DOC hut with six bunks located at 297 m in Te Urewera (Bay of Plenty). Facilities: mattresses, heating, non-flush toilets, untreated water that must be boiled. No fees, no booking, first come first served. Check before travelling: since 2022, Te Uru Taumatua (the operational arm of Ngāi Tūhoe) has been progressively withdrawing 44 huts from Te Urewera. DOC now directs its Te Urewera pages to this shared inventory. Confirm the current status with the Te Urewera Visitor Centre or Ngāi Tūhoe at +64 6 837 3803 before setting out.
