Whangaehu Hut

The place

4-bunk alpine hut in Tongariro National Park (Tukino sector), at 2,080 m on the eastern flank of Mt Ruapehu, above the Whangaehu River. Exposed alpine environment with no marked track — steep, uneven, rocky terrain, sudden weather changes, avalanche risk especially from May to November. Off-track: for experienced alpinists only (map, compass, GPS). **Managed by the NZ Alpine Club** — Backcountry Hut Pass and hut tickets not accepted; booking and rates on the NZAC website.
