Weidmannsruh Wanderheim
The place
Self-service hut of the DAV Beckum section, at 732 m in the Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald, municipality of Floh-Seligenthal). Building erected in 1907 as a shelter for forestry workers, expanded over the decades. Under East Germany, it was run as a youth hostel. In 2003, the DAV Beckum section acquired the property and converted it into a modern alpine hut; since 2011, it has operated self-service with no catering. Capacity of 20 beds in the main building, plus 4 more in the adjoining holiday house, and a 40-seat dining room. A notable location near the Ebertswiese, one of the largest and most flower-rich mountain meadows on the Rennsteig (a historic 169 km ridge trail crossing the Thüringer Wald). Hikes to the Höhnberge and the Rennsteig's panoramic trails.
