Warnscale Head
The place
Warnscale Head Bothy is a rustic shelter maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association, at 383 m elevation in the Lake District, nicknamed "the room with a view" for its panorama over the valley down toward Buttermere. Built in the 1750s as a quarrymen's cottage, left derelict for a long time (~150 years), restored in recent decades thanks to volunteers. Now unlocked and free to use. Built of local slate, with views over Buttermere and Crummock Water and the surrounding fells (Fleetwith Pike, High Stile). Capacity: 2 wooden beds and a little floor space. The back is a weatherproof room with a secure roof, paned windows, and even a wood stove. Just south of Fleetwith Pike on the slopes of Warnscale Beck (southwest of Buttermere, Cumbria). Most common access: from Honister Slate Mine car park, 45 min to 1 h for ~2.5 km.
