Warden Hut

The place

Standard 12-bunk DOC hut in Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park (south Marlborough), at 624 m. Access from State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura for 5 km, then a turn-off towards the Mt Lyford area. Parking at the Kahutara River bridge, 25 km from Kaikoura. Locked gate at the entrance: motorized access requires contacting Colin Nimmo at Muzzle Station (+64 3 319 5791). Road seasonally closed in winter, maintenance toll applies to vehicles. No booking, payment by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026).
