The place
Waiweranui Trust Hut in Egmont National Park, Ōkurukuru/Ōpunake area (Taranaki, North Island, New Zealand), at 404 m elevation, on the southwest flank of the 2,518 m Mount Taranaki, an almost perfectly conical andesitic stratovolcano. Continuous cluster of Taranaki (batches 220-358). Community hut of the Waiweranui Trust (a family trust; the Māori name means "great twisting water"), in a zone of rimu podocarp, Dacrycarpus dacrydioides + kahikatea + Rhopalostylis sapida nikau, a rare temperate palm + heritage of Ngā Iwi o Taranaki (the eight Taranaki iwi, granted legal personhood status in 2017 via the Te Awa Tupua Bill, the world's first river/mountain to become a legal entity, 40,000 years of ancestral occupation + the 1863-1881 confiscations, the Taranaki Wars, 5 million ha of land taken by English settlers, redress in 2003 of NZ$500 million).
