Waiopehu Hut
The place
Standard backcountry hut with 18 bunks at 900 m in Tararua Forest Park (Wellington/Kapiti, NZ), on the bushline with panoramic views over the plains and the high Tararua peaks to the east on clear days. Managed by the Levin Waiopehu Tramping Club (contact: Tramping@LWTC.org.nz). The third hut on this site, opened in May 2002 after DOC acquired the land, replacing the 1947 structure, which itself had replaced the hut destroyed in the 1936 storm. Access from Levin via Poads Road (~8 km from the park boundary to the hut), 4-5 hours from Gladstone Road; 4 hours to Te Matawai Hut. No booking: Standard ticket (adults $10, youth $5, under 4 free) or Backcountry Hut Pass.
