The place

Wainui Hut is a standard 4-bunk hut at 727 m elevation on the Wainui Track, which links Canaan Downs to Birds Clearing in Abel Tasman National Park (Golden Bay, Nelson/Tasman, New Zealand). The easiest access is from Canaan Downs (750 m), 11 km from the turn-off to the Canaan Downs car park. No booking required, first come first served. Rates: 10 NZD/night adult, 5 NZD/night youth 5-17, free under 5. The Wainui Track is an easy walk with some rocky and rooty sections; the valley is forested in beautiful beech, and the trail runs alongside the Wainui River with mossy banks. Probably the least-used hut in the park but ideal for a quiet night or day stop. Former New Zealand Forest Service hut with an open fireplace. An aviary on site is used by Project Janszoon and DOC to acclimatise kaka and kakariki before reintroduction.
