The place

Basic eight-bunk hut in Ruahine Forest Park, Manawatu/Whanganui region (North Island, New Zealand), at 1,167 metres elevation. Original building from 1939, relocated in 1966 following erosion by the stream. In 2016, the Heretaunga Tramping Club renovated it with a new deck, a veranda with wood storage space and a rainwater tank. Not part of the DOC's Backcountry Hut Passes system; donations can be sent to the Heretaunga Tramping Club (bank details and email provided). Access from North Block Road (via SH50 and Wakarara Road): river routes from Waipawa Forks Hut in 3 h 30-4 h (5 km). No DOC-marked track: independent navigation required; unmarked river crossings and steep, exposed sections near Waipawa Saddle demand experience.
