The place

Serviced 28-bunk Great Walk DOC hut on the Tongariro Northern Circuit, in Tongariro National Park (North Island), at 1,150 m elevation. Wood stove heating with an annual wood supply. Recommended access: from Whakapapa Village via the Taranaki Falls loop, then up to Tama Saddle and down along the Waihohonu Stream. Online booking required; same-day bookings until 8 pm subject to availability. Peak season rates (1 May-22 Oct 2026): NZ$25 adult (resident and international), $12.50 youth; off-peak: NZ$44 resident, $66 international (youth $22/$33), free under 4. Visitor centre service fee NZ$10.
