Waiaua Gorge Hut

The place

Serviced DOC hut with 16 bunks (two dorms with two sleeping platforms each) at 599 m in Egmont National Park (Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki, Taranaki, NZ). Bunks with mattresses, rainwater from a tank, fireplace with firewood supplied. Long-drop toilet a short distance away. Access via the Around the Mountain Circuit or the Ihaia Track from Ihaia Road (5.9 km, 2 h 30-3 h 30 one way). Following damage, the route now follows the bed of the Waiaua River: caution advised for debris and flood risk. Rates: adults $25/night, youth 5-17 $12.50, under 4 free. Track often muddy after rain.
