An easy-access DOC hut for a Wellington weekend from Wellington (iconic Remutaka Trail, 12 km, 3 h return), in an area of mixed podocarp forest with kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides, NZ's tallest tree at 60 m, growing in wet lowland), heritage of Ngāti Toa (iwi of Te Rauparaha, the "Napoleon of the South", 1800s conquests from Waikato to Kāpiti, Whakatū Nelson, South Island).
