Vecchia Capanna Marco e Rosa De Marchi
The place
The old Capanna Marco e Rosa De Marchi at 3597 m, at the Forcola di Cresta Guzza in the Bernina massif on the Italian side (municipality of Lanzada, Valmalenco, Sondrio, Lombardy). Built in 1913 on the initiative and at the expense of Marco De Marchi and his wife Rosa Curioni, with a major contribution from the alpinist Alfredo Corti — a personal friend of Marco and Rosa and rope partner during the 1910 Bernina traverse that inspired the idea for the refuge. Inaugurated on 14 September 1913; built with the participation of many mountain guides including Christian Klucker, the Swiss building firm Issler, and numerous skilled Italian workers. Today used as an emergency shelter and winter bivouac — capacity 38 places. The new Marco e Rosa refuge (2003) stands a few metres above it.
