Vallejo Gantner Hut
The place
The Vallejo Gantner Hut is a memorial hut at around 1700 m elevation at Macalister Springs, near Mt Howitt and the Crosscut Saw, in Alpine National Park (Victoria, Australia). Built as a memorial after the death of Vallejo Gantner, grandson of Sidney Myer (founder of the Myer department store chain), who died at 19 in a hunting accident. Designed in 1970 by architect David McGlashan (of the firm McGlashan & Everist) and built in 1970-71, opened on 17 April 1971. Notable architecture: shaped like a hiker's tent, with two gable beams supporting a long ridge purlin anchored by a stone buttress. Triangular facade facing the panorama of the Crosscut Saw. It is one of three architecturally significant huts in the Victorian Alps (alongside Cleve Cole Hut, 1937, and Joyce Brockhoff Hut, 1949).

On the AAWT (Australian Alps Walking Track). Accessible from Mt Howitt or Chesters Yard.
