Upper Whirinaki Hut
The place
Hut very popular with hunters in the Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park (East Coast / Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand). 9 bunks, wood stove, water supply. Jointly managed by the NZ Deer Stalkers Association and DOC. Facilities: heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets, untreated water (boil before use). Large deck at the front opening onto the clearing, wood stove, water from tank or stream. Easy loop on rolling bush tracks, with no major climb, and a river section where you may spot whio (blue duck). Access: 3.5 h from Central Whirinaki Hut via the Taumutu Stream, or 3 h from Plateau Car Park. Fees: 1 Standard Hut Ticket per night in the honesty box (or Backcountry Hut Pass).
