Upper Matakuhia Hut
The place
8-bunk hut in a sunny clearing of Waipunga Forest (East Coast / Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand). Access: from SH5 take SH38 towards Maunga Kākaramea, at Te Whaiti turn right into Minginui Road, then Old Te Whaiti Road at Minginui Village, follow Main South Road for 38.8 km, then Pine Milling Road on the right (1.6 km), then Matakuhia Carpark Road on the right (400 m). From Matakuhia carpark, follow Matakuhia Track along the stream due south for 6.5 km (2-2.5 h / +66 m elevation gain). No booking or fee. Hut recently "rediscovered" by DOC after disappearing from its database — rehabilitation work and track re-marking have since been carried out.
