Upper Makaroro Hut

The place

Standard four-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Ruahine Forest Park, Hawke's Bay region (North Island, New Zealand), at 750 meters elevation. Built in 1956 by the New Zealand Forest Service for deer control. River water, wood-burner heating. No booking required, payment by Standard Hut Ticket or Backcountry Hut Pass: 10 NZD/night adult, 5 NZD child, free under 5. Three access routes: from the Makaroro car park following the Makaroro River upstream (5-7 h), from Wakarara Road via Parks Peak Hut with a steep 2 km descent (4-4.5 h to Parks Peak then descent), or from Mangleton Road via Sentry Box and Parks Peak Huts.
