Undantagsstugan Källstorp
The place
Small traditional cottage (an "undantagsstuga") set at 98 m in the municipality of Västervik, in the heart of southern Småland (Kalmar County, Sweden). The undantagsstuga is a rural building typical of 19th-century Sweden: a small house built next to the main farmhouse to house elderly parents once the estate was passed on to the next generation ("undantag" = the retirement clause in the inheritance contract). The Källstorp area, in Västervik, still holds several of these small structures bearing witness to the old rural way of life. The forested Småland region is famous for its "backstugor" (semi-buried huts with turf roofs, almost invisible in the landscape), its glacial lakes, its peat bogs, and its vast pine and birch forests. A rustic stopover for hikers crossing southeastern Sweden on trails linking the Baltic coast to the Småland hinterland. Iconic wildlife: elk, roe deer, capercaillie.
