The place
A combined autio- and varaustupa lodge for self-sufficient hikers, managed by Metsähallitus in the Kemihaara wilderness area (eastern Finnish Lapland), municipality of Savukoski. In the Sorvortanjoki valley north of Uittipiekkatunturi, near the headwaters of the Sorvortanjoki. Off marked trails: good orientation skills required, accessed on skis or on foot. In the snow-free season, the shortest route is via Loka toward Pihtisjoki, turning right at Mukkajoenrova, then the road to Taltukkaselkä, and about 6 km of route-finding to the lodge. The building contains both a free autiotupa section and the varaustupa part (bookable beds, paid, 1-2 nights); the yard has a shed/toilet and a sauna shared by occupants of both sections.
