U Václava
The place
Shelter-refuge ("útulna" in Czech) at 634 m in the Czech Republic (Plzeň region, Brdy area or neighboring mountains, coordinates 49.69 N, 13.73 E). The name "U Václava" ("At Václav's") honors a local figure — Václav (Wenceslas) is one of the most popular Czech first names, also the name of the patron saint of the Czech Republic (Saint Wenceslas I, Duke of Bohemia, died 935). Located in Czech mid-altitude forests, on the edge of Brdy National Park (created in 2016, one of Europe's most recent national parks — protecting a historic military area now repurposed). Basic open-access building, a typical rustic emergency shelter for hikers ("nouzové nocoviště"). Exceptional forest setting: beech forests, fir forests, iconic Central Bohemian cultural landscapes, rich in historical industrial heritage (steelmaking, glassmaking). Emblematic wildlife: red deer (significant population in the Brdy), wild boar, Eurasian lynx, eagle owl, red kite. A stop on the KČT trails (Klub Českých Turistů — Czech Tourist Club, founded 1888), which masterfully mark the country's 40,000 km of themed paths.
