Tutuwai Hut

The place

Standard hut with 20 bunks on shared sleeping platforms with mattresses, in the Tauwharenīkau Valley of Tararua Forest Park (Wellington), at 317 m. Cold water from a rain tank, wood burner for heating (wood not supplied at standard huts), long-drop toilet. Two access routes: from Marchant Road in 7–8 h, or from the Waiohine Gorge road-end; the former access via Waiohine Valley Road and the Reeves Track is no longer possible. No booking, payment by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass in the honesty box (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026).
