The place

A "serviced" DOC hut in Tararua Forest Park (Waiohine Valley, Wairarapa, NZ), at 205 m. Shared sleeping platforms with mattresses in two dorms, cold running water, wood stove. Long-drop toilets a short distance away. Access 4 h 30 from the Waiohine Gorge Road end, or 5-6 h from the Mt Holdsworth Road end. Fees adults $25/night, youth 5-17 $12.50, under 4 free. Backcountry Hut Passes accepted. Online bookings open through 30 June 2027, closed at 8 pm for same-day bookings; +$10 via the visitor centre. Bring a sleeping bag, cooking equipment, toilet paper, a light, and fire-starting material.
