The place

DOC bunkhouse on Tiritiri Matangi Island, a pest-free wildlife sanctuary in the Hauraki Gulf (Auckland), 4 km off the Whangaparāoa Peninsula. Capacity for 15 people in 3 dormitory rooms (Kahu 4, Kōkako 5, Tuatara 6). Gas stove/oven, microwave, barbecue, two fridges/freezer, two hot showers, two toilets, kitchen utensils, drinkable rainwater. Views over the gulf and access to regenerating bush. Rates (until 30 June 2026): adult NZ$48, child 0-17 years NZ$37 in shared occupancy. Online bookings, next opening 16 June 2026; phone/visitor center bookings NZ$10 fee. Access by public ferry Explore Group, Wed-Sun (no service Monday/Tuesday except public holidays). High season November-April.
