Tiern
The place
A former military building converted into a refuge on the island of Hovedøya, just a few minutes by boat from Aker Brygge in the Oslo fjord (Norway). Tiern sits right next to the island's ferry landing, reachable by public Ruter boats departing from Vippetangen. Hovedøya is famous for the ruins of its 12th-century Cistercian abbey (Hovedøya Kloster) and, at about 0.4 km², forms a protected nature reserve within the Oslo archipelago — a favourite summer strolling ground for Oslo residents for swimming, picnics and open-air concerts. The refuge is mainly used by local sections of DNT Oslo og Omegn and by scout groups — booking is essential. An exceptional marine archipelago setting, abundant birdlife (cormorants, gulls), medieval monastic history, and 18th-19th century artillery batteries.
