Tīeke Marae/kāinga

The place

A unique shelter that serves both as a functioning marae (Maori meeting place) and a DOC hut, in Whanganui National Park (Manawatu/Whanganui, North Island, New Zealand). A stop on the Whanganui Journey, offering cultural immersion for visitors. Great Walk season, 1 October to 30 April: adult rate NZ$35, children (5-17) NZ$18, cooking equipment provided. Off-season, 1 May to 30 September: reduced rates of NZ$25 adults and NZ$12.50 children, no cooking equipment provided (bring your own stove). Online booking via DOC; Backcountry Hut Pass valid only from May to September. Strict cultural protocol: remove shoes before entering buildings, no alcohol or drugs, do not place clothing or footwear on food surfaces, ask permission before taking photographs, respectfully take part in the pōwhiri (welcome ceremony) if invited. Koha (customary donation) of NZ$10 to NZ$30 per person for the upkeep of the wharenui, preferably in cash.
