The place
Historic DOC lodge on the slopes of Taranaki Maunga, in the North Egmont area of Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki park, 29 km from New Plymouth via Egmont Road. **Built as a military barracks in the 1860s during the Taranaki Wars, relocated to North Egmont in 1891, and opened as accommodation in 1892.** Capacity of 26 people across 4 rooms: three 8-bed rooms and one room with 2 bunk beds. Facilities: common lounge with basic heating, self-catering kitchen, separate men's/women's bathrooms with showers and toilets, an accessible toilet, and parking for 5 cars. Access: SH 3 to Egmont Village, then Egmont Road; snow and ice possible in winter. Rates (until 30 June 2026): NZ$28/night adult, NZ$14 youth (5-17), free under 5 per bunk. Advance online booking required; same-day bookings accepted until 8pm subject to availability.
