Te Totara Hut
The place
Small hut in a clearing on the banks of the Parahaki Stream, in the south-west of Te Urewera (Bay of Plenty / East Coast, New Zealand) — managed by the DOC office at Aniwaniwa. The oldest surviving hut in Te Urewera. Built in 1952 by a team of deer hunters led by Rex Forrester — four new huts in the bush for deer culling, Te Totara being the first, with materials carried in by horse. Small single-storey wooden building 4.2 × 4.2 m, one door, two windows and a fireplace, low veranda on the east side, sloping gable roof. Built from split totara boards with the frame clearly visible inside. History: original accommodation for hunters during wildlife control operations.
