Te Pukeohikarua (Te Puke) Hut
The place
DOC hut at 1444 m in the upper central part of Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay), originally built to the New Zealand Forest Service's six-bunk design in the mid-1960s, fully renovated in 2002. Facilities: wood stove for heating, water drawn from the stream 25 m to the north, pit toilet 20 m to the south, meat safe for hunters. Rate 10 NZD adult and 5 NZD youth 5-17 per night, free below that, payable with standard hut tickets or an annual Backcountry Hut Pass. No booking. Walking access: 2 h 30-3 h from Harkness Hut (west), 3 h from Mangaturutu Hut (southeast). Helipad 80 m north above the hut. 4x4 recommended on the access roads to the car parks, some subject to temporary restrictions (logging operations).
