Te Matawai Hut

The place

DOC standard hut with 18 bunks in Tararua Forest Park (Wellington/Kapiti), at 853 m. Maintained by the Greater Wellington Backcountry Network. Best access via the western side of the Tararuas via Gladstone Road and Poads Road: about 6 h from the Poads Road trailhead; 2 h from Arete Hut; 4-5 h from Waiopehu or Mangahao Flats. No booking, payment via hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026).
