Tataweka Hut

The place

Standard hut with six bunks recorded in Te Urewera, east coast (North Island, New Zealand), at 499 metres altitude. Tracks and facilities are now managed by Te Uru Taumatua (the operational entity of Ngāi Tūhoe); Te Urewera is recognised in New Zealand law as a "living person". A decommissioning programme for 44 huts has been under way since 2022: status should be confirmed with Ngāi Tūhoe (+64 6 837 3803) before any trip. If still operational, rates until 30 June 2026: NZD10/night adult, NZD5 youth (5-17 years), free under 5, Standard Hut Ticket or Backcountry Hut Pass.
