Tarn Hut

The place

Basic 4-bunk DOC hut at 1,264 m in the Puketeraki Forest Conservation Area (Canterbury, NZ), next to a picturesque small tarn in open alpine grassland. No running water: bring your own. Free. Access from Lees Valley Road: 4.5 hours via the Lillburn Route, 4x4 or high-clearance 2x4 recommended up to the locked gate, then 3.5 km on foot through private farmland. Youngman Stream Hut ~2.5 hours away.
