The place

Basic two-bunk bivouac managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Ruahine Forest Park, Hawke's Bay region (North Island, New Zealand), at 1,340 meters altitude on open tops. Built in 1960 by the New Zealand Forest Service, a minimal shelter in an exposed alpine area. Free access. Approach from Mill Roadend (off Makaretu Road on State Highway 50): descend to the Tukituki River, climb via Rosvalls Track to Black Ridge, then head north on an unmarked route. Snow, strong winds, and rain are possible year-round at this altitude.
