Tangihua Hut
The place
Standard DOC hut, 8 bunks, in the Tangihua Forest (Northland region, North Island, New Zealand). Set in a clearing with views north over pastoral hills. Facilities: mattresses, non-flush toilets, untreated water (boil before use). No booking: first come, first served. A fee applies. Two access routes: via Omana Road to the south (the more popular option, 30 min walk then 15 min on trail to the Tangihua Lions Lodge, follow the Te Haua Uru Track which becomes the Northern Tangihua Route, 8-9 hours); or via Tangihua Road (~1 hour, shorter but starting on private land — landowner permission required). Tangihua Forest: 3000 ha of mixed podocarp-broadleaf forest with some kauri, an iconic landmark of the Whangarei/Dargaville area.
