Tailings Hut
The place
Standard DOC hut with 12 bunks at 856 m in Oteake Conservation Park (Central Otago, NZ). 4WD access via Mount Buster Road from Naseby, about 2 hours from the park entrance with river crossings and steep rocky sections. The building comprises three structures: two dormitories originally built as individual quarters for workers on the Roxburgh Hydro Dam, and a 1930s farmhouse now used as the kitchen. Fireplace — bring your own firewood (treeless tussock landscape). Rates: adults NZ$10/night, youth 5-17 NZ$5, under-5s free (pay via honesty box, Standard tickets, or Backcountry Hut Pass). Shared use with leaseholders for mustering: contact the local DOC office before setting out.
