Syme Hut

The place

DOC hut located at 1940 m on Panitahi (formerly Fanthams Peak), in Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki National Park. Often called the park's best overnight stop, with panoramic views over the region and remarkable sunsets in clear weather. Facilities: outdoor toilets, cold running water from a rainwater tank, no heating. Access from the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre, 5 to 6 h return. In winter, mountaineering equipment and experience required (snow and alpine conditions). Rate NZ$10 adult and NZ$5 youth (5-17) per night, free below that age, payable by standard tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass. No booking.
