The place

DOC serviced-category hut with twenty bunks located at 1280 m in the eastern part of Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay): the most frequented hut in the park. Access from the North Block Road trailhead, about 100 km from Napier; 2 to 3 hours walking for around 600 m of elevation gain. Dogs prohibited as the approach crosses private farmland. Facilities: water tank, wood heating, sleeping platforms, tables with benches, long-drop toilet. Important: no cooking facilities in the hut, bring your own stove. Rates until 30 June 2026: NZD25 adult Sunday to Friday, NZD30 on Saturday; NZD12.50 child 5-17 on weekdays, NZD15 on Saturday; free under 5. Backcountry Hut Pass accepted. Online booking, availability until 30 June 2027; same-day bookings accepted until 8pm subject to availability (NZD10 fee via visitor centre).
