The place

Koliba (traditional Slovak forest cabin) located below the summit of Suchý Hrádok in the Žihľavník area, municipality of Pribylina, district of Liptovský Mikuláš (Žilina region, northern Slovakia). The site, at around 945 m elevation, lies on the north-western foothills of the Low Tatras, right next to the Low Tatras National Park (NAPANT). The koliba traditionally has a central hearth, a steep shingle roof and a drinking water spring ("studnička"). The kolibas of the Liptov region are iconic establishments of Slovak pastoral culture, often open to hikers with simple lodging and traditional food (halušky, bryndza). A mountain setting of beech forest and high-altitude pastures, near the major traverses of the western Tatras and the Low Tatras.
