The place
Hut on the route of the Old Ghost Road in the Mōkihinui River area (West Coast, South Island, New Zealand). Owned and managed by the Mōkihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust. Built in 2011 as part of the Old Ghost Road project. 10 bunks, 2 summer shelters and 1 tent site. Communal heating, simple lighting and cooking, water collected from the roof (boil before use). Booking required via the Old Ghost Road website. DOC Backcountry Hut Passes / Tickets cannot be used here. The trail descends nearly 800 m over 13 km to the hut; the first 4 km are the most technical part of the route (Grade 5 in places).
