The place

Standard 8-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Ruahine Forest Park, Hawke's Bay region, North Island (New Zealand). Built in 1965 by the New Zealand Forest Service, named in memory of William "Bill" Stanfield, local bushman and farmer; renovated by volunteers in December 2021. Rainwater collected in a tank, wood-stove heating. Main access from the west bank of the Tamaki River (5.1 km, about 2 h 30), on an unmarked track not maintained by the DOC; caution advised in case of flooding. Rates: NZD 10/night adult, NZD 5/night youth, free under 5, payment at the honesty box.
