The place

Hut built in 2009 near Jackson Bay, 51 km south of Haast on the Haast-Jackson Bay Road (West Coast, South Island, New Zealand). Well built: large double-glazed windows, good bunks and benches, mosquito screens, tap water from a 500 L rain tank. 6 mattresses. No booking required but 1 standard ticket (blue for adults / yellow for youth) per night to be deposited in the honesty box. Route reserved for experienced, well-equipped trampers and climbers: from Jackson Bay, multiple crossings of the Kakapo Creek, then a hazardous coastal section only passable around low tide — fatalities recorded in recent years. Recommended seasons: summer and autumn. Personal locator beacon mandatory. Start: small car park about 500 m before Jackson Bay.
