The place

St. Pöltner Hütte: A Reflection of Alpine History The St. Pöltner Hütte is an alpine refuge of the St. Pölten section of the Austrian Alpine Club, located in the State of Salzburg on the border with East Tyrol (Osttirol). Nestled in the Venediger group at 2481 metres altitude just west of the Felber Tauern pass (2465 metres altitude), it marks the transition to the Granatspitz group. A 380 kV power line between Kaprun and Lienz runs directly above the refuge. At the pass stands the Tauernkreuz, consecrated in 1952, in front of which a mountain mass is celebrated on the last Sunday of August. Environmental Integration The creation of the St. Pöltner Ostweg and Westweg trails, as well as the choice of the St. Pöltner Hütte's location on the Felber Tauern, were initiated by section chairman Hans Donabaum. Construction of the St. Pöltner Hütte faced many challenges. Work was completed on 3 August 1922. Accessibility The most frequently used approaches to the St. Pöltner Hütte are the path from the Mittersill Hintersee car park (1300 metres altitude, walking time: 3.5 hours) to the north, and the path from the Matreier Tauernhaus mountain lodge (1512 metres altitude, walking time: 3.5 hours) to the south.
